Gretchen

We affectionately call her "Wrechen Gretchen", and the name suits her well.

Gretchen was abandoned on the side of the road. We know she was abandoned because she never left the spot for over 3 months, and as far as she was concerned she wasn’t about to accept help from any filthy human. After all, that’s why she was on the side of the road to begin with. People suck and most of us could agree. But there was a very determined rescuer (probably crazy) that took the time to live trap her and delivered to where hate and crazy often find happy company with one another. Or is it misery loves company?

Anyways, she came to Ferne's Acres. It wasn’t easy, and Gretchen gave us more than enough reasons to cut our losses and focus on other dogs in need. But there was something about her eyes behind the vicious snapping teeth that made us give her more time. And the day she crawled up beside me to extend her paw and pet me was the day I knew it had all been worth it.

Gretchen still is a challenge. You can break her trust easily and she’ll let you know; but she learned to like more than a couple of us and even has a dog friend or two. She loves to play and her sit for a treat game is strong. New people are not her jam and she isn’t shy about telling you get lost. But if you do get over her wall of hate and gnashing teeth, you see this sweet girl that loves affection even if she gives the phrase "F&@k around and find out," its true meaning.
